On Friday (April 24th) Jackson turned one. He is crawling really well and pulling up on everything but he hasn't taken that elusive first step yet. He still only has two teeth and he babbles all the time. Other than mama and dada he has yet to say anything distinguishable though. He loves to clap, wave (facing his hand toward himself), and dance to music. He is so easygoing (as long as he's not hungry or tired- typical man) and is such a joy in our lives. We can't believe it has already been a year since he was born, it's crazy how quickly the time goes by!
Both my mom and father-in-law will be in town next week, so we have put off the major celebration (aka Jack eating a cake all by himself) until next week. We didn't want his actual birthday to go by without notice, though, so we did a few things to make it special.
In the morning, we gave Jack a blueberry muffin with a candle in it and sang to him. He had no idea what we were doing or what to think of the candle, but he definitely enjoyed the muffin.
Later in the day (after nap and after Hadleigh had returned from school) we set a few presents on the floor for Jack and set him loose- thinking, of course, that he would be so excited and just tear into the presents. Instead, he just crawled right past them and didn't want anything to do with opening them, even with our help. After we unwrapped the gifts, though (next time I will save the trouble of wrapping and the paper) he LOVED hie new toys.

trying to force Jackson to open his gifts...

We got him several different sized balls since he loves to roll and chase after them. At least he liked the gifts once they were unwrapped...
he had to test them all out by putting them in his mouth, silly kid...

For dinner, we decided to pack a picnic of things Jack likes, like pbj's, graham crackers, oranges, etc. and go on a family bike ride to a nearby playground where the kids could play and we could also eat. Everything went according to plan except we didn't realize that the weather had changed drastically since earlier in the day (when we were last outside) and that it was FREEZING cold, windy, and threatening rain at any moment. Needless to say, we played and ate very quickly! We almost beat the storm entirely, but unfortunately we ended up riding our bikes home in fierce wind and driving rain. Trying to ride in those conditions was exhausting and VERY challenging so I was really impressed with Hadleigh's endurance and tenacity! She was the only one of the kids on a bike. The boys were snuggled up, warm and dry in the bike trailer, so at least the birthday boy still had a good time!

Happy Birthday Jackson! We are so glad that you are a part of our family.
